Recent seafood thefts in New Jersey and Pennsylvania total over $350,000. The industry is on high alert as logistics crimes surge in 2024.
Thieves are making waves within the seafood industry, with recent thefts totaling over $350,000 in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
A truck loaded with $305,000 worth of shrimp vanished from a Middlesex warehouse on September 12. Bound for Costco, the vehicle and its precious cargo were later found in Perth Amboy.
"We're actively investigating all leads," said Detective Sergeant Sean Flanagan.
In this case, thieves snatched $42,000 of crabmeat from a parked truck on September 4. The driver woke to find "approximately six males stealing boxes of crabmeat," according to police reports.
Also in Philly, a separate heist saw one pallet of tuna disappear from a parked truck on August 8. Details on this crime are sparse at the moment.
These incidents are part of a larger trend. CargoNet reports:
"Criminal activities impacting the logistics and transportation industry reached new highs," CargoNet warns.
As seafood prices rise, so does the allure for thieves.
