📈 U.S. July Container Imports Rise, Echoing Pre-Pandemic Trends. Descartes Systems Group has unveiled its August Global Shipping Report. According to the report, U.S. container imports for July 2023 saw a 5.1% increase compared to June, reaching 2,187,810 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). While these figures indicate a 13.6% decline from July 2022, they closely match the pre-pandemic rates of July 2019. The growth for the initial seven months of 2023 stays within a 1.7% range of the same period in 2019. EVP Chris Jones of Descartes highlighted that this growth aligns with typical pre-pandemic peak season patterns.
📦 Record Warehouse Rents in Q2 2023 Despite Lower Demand. Despite declining demand, U.S. warehouse rents reached record highs in the second quarter of 2023, with an average asking rate of $9.59 per square foot, marking a 16.1% increase from the previous year. Several factors contribute to this trend: long-term lease agreements that disregard short-term market conditions, a persistently tight warehouse space market compared to historical standards, and newly constructed facilities with premium prices. While the demand for storage has decreased, and some developers are cutting back on new projects, experts anticipate rents to continue rising, albeit at a slower pace.
🤝 Forward Air & Omni Logistics Unite in Merger Deal. On Aug. 10, Forward Air Corp. and Omni Logistics announced their intention to merge in a cash-and-stock deal. The combined entity aims to form a scaled enterprise focused on high-value less-than-truckload (LTL) services. Both companies boards have approved, and the merger is slated to close later this year. Forward’s CEO, Tom Schmitt, will remain the chairman and CEO of the combined company, while Omni’s CEO, J.J. Schickel, will serve as president. The merger seeks to leverage the combined strengths of both companies to offer high-value freight and expanded services to clients.
