π WHATβS COOKINβ IN FREIGHT
π Union Levels High in Transportation. Union membership hit a record low of 10% in 2023, down from 20% in 1983. However, Transport and warehousing sits at 16% unionization. Union workers earn more: $1,262 weekly average versus $966 for non-union. And unions still make waves. Teamsters influenced Yellow Corp.'s closure after failed talks. Also, UPS Teamsters secured a historic $30 billion deal with major wage hikes--part-timers will see a 48% average increase over five years. But trouble brews elsewhere. East and Gulf Coast ports face potential strikes as negotiations stall.
ποΈ MyCarrier vs project 44. The two freight tech companies are locked in a Delaware court battle over alleged contract violations. The dispute centers on a 2023 agreement's "No Build-Behind" clause, with project44 accusing MyCarrier of developing a competing eBoL product. MyCarrier denies this, claiming they had not built any competitive tech and that the eBoL features on their platform were already being used. As project44 threatens service suspension, MyCarrier is seeking legal protection. The court had declined MyCarrierβs restraining order and had set a date for August 6 for both parties to engage in a formal discovery process. This case could set precedents and regulations for future freight tech partnerships. This story is still developing.
π 300 Stolen Pallets Recovered. A major cargo theft bust occurred in Riverside County, California on August 2, 2024. Authorities raided a warehouse in Jurupa Valley, uncovering over 300 pallets of stolen merchandise. The goods ranged from small appliances to high-end gaming computers. Yong Li, 33, was arrested for receiving stolen property and an aggravated white-collar crime enhancement. The raid was the result of an investigation into an organized retail crime and trailer cargo theft ring that began in February.

Space Shipping: Outpost to Launch Containers into Orbit
Move over, FedEx. There's a new delivery service in town, and it's out of this world. Space logistics company Outpost is gearing up to launch shipping containers into orbit, a giant leap for global cargo delivery.
The Big Picture:
Outpost plans to put 20-foot shipping containers in space
These "Carryall" spacecraft can carry up to 10 tons of cargo
First launch planned for 2027
"Shipping containers delivered anywhere on Earth through space." β Outpost Carryall promotional video.
From Satellites to Space Freight
Founded by former Made In Space (now RedWire) executives, Outpost started as a satellite return company. Now, they're thinking bigger - much bigger.
Key Milestones:
Developed reusable satellites
Created novel re-entry method using inflatable heat shields
Secured $1.7 million Department of Defense contract
Outpost CEO Jason Dunn explains: "Earth return is not about just returning to Earth. It's about returning to a very specific place on Earth. We want landing pad precision."
How It Works:
Launch: Carryall hitches a ride on existing rockets
Orbit: Unfolds massive heat shield
Return: Uses robotic paraglider for precise landings
Surprising Stat: Outpost's payload capacity is 5x higher than traditional space capsules
"Because our entire entry system is fabric and lightweight and low mass, we can dedicate a huge amount of our vehicle to the customer's payload," Dunn said at a recent conference.
Recent Developments:
β’ $1.25 million Air Force contract for orbital cargo warehousing β’ Partnership with NASA for International Space Station cargo return β’ Successful test flight: 180 km journey, 5-meter landing accuracy
What's Next?
Outpost aims to make space manufacturing a reality. By dramatically lowering return costs, they could unlock new industries beyond Earth's atmosphere.
While we're not quite at "Prime Space" delivery yet, Outpost is bringing the final frontier closer to our front doors.
