A Canadian trucker caught with 300 pounds of cocaine, while CBP seized $503K worth at the Pharr Bridge. Law enforcement is cracking down on the war on drugs.
Law enforcement made three massive cocaine busts this week, stopping nearly $1.7 million worth of drugs in commercial vehicles. From Indiana to Texas to California officials are cracking down on smugglers using transportation hubs to move illicit goods.
A Canadian man, Naseeb Chisty, 49, of Etobicoke, Ontario, was arrested in northwestern Indiana after state troopers found nearly 300 pounds of cocaine in his semi-truck during a traffic stop.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Interstate 94 weigh station near Chesterton, where officers pulled Chisty over for a motor carrier violation. A K-9 unit alerted to the presence of drugs, leading police to discover 273.2 pounds of cocaine in the trailer. The substance field-tested positive for cocaine, and Chisty was taken into custody, facing charges of dealing and possession of cocaine.
The bust happened about an hour southeast of Chicago in Porter County.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized over $1.2 million worth of cocaine from a commercial vehicle at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility in California.
On September 10, a 34-year-old truck driver entered the facility driving a semi-truck with an empty flatbed trailer. A K-9 unit alerted to the vehicle, prompting officers to conduct a secondary inspection using non-intrusive technology.
They discovered 167.11 pounds of cocaine cleverly hidden in the truck's fifth wheel area, packaged into 65 bundles. The driver was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations, and both the drugs and truck were seized.
Port Director Rosa E. Hernandez praised the officers for their vigilance in securing the border and protecting communities from illegal narcotics.
CBP officers intercepted a separate shipment at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas. After pulling aside a commercial vehicle for a secondary inspection, they found $503,000 worth of cocaine hidden inside.
CBP officers uncovered several bundles of the drug disguised within the truck's cargo, marking yet another major drug bust at this critical border crossing. CBP emphasized that they remain vigilant against rising smuggling attempts across major transportation hubs.
These seizures are showing the continuing use of commercial trucking for drug trafficking, with authorities working hard to stay one step ahead. Smugglers may think they are using sophisticated methods to get by, but law enforcement remains committed to intercepting these illegal products.
