Semi-Truck Hazmat Fire Shuts Down I-15, Drivers Stranded

Click the image above to watch the video.

On the early morning of July 26, 2024, a severe incident involving a semi-truck carrying lithium-ion batteries caused a crisis situation on I-15 near Baker, California.

The truck overturned and caught fire, leading to a 48-hour shutdown of the highway, a vital route between California and Las Vegas.

Closure and Reopening

  • Initial Response: The northbound lanes were entirely shut down at Afton Canyon Road. Southbound lanes closed but reopened by late afternoon the next day.
  • Full Reopening: All lanes were reopened early Sunday, providing relief after nearly 48 hours of traffic disruption.

Impact on Travelers

  • Stranded Motorists: Thousands faced grueling conditions, trapped in their vehicles as temperatures soared to 109Β°F.
  • Resource Scarcity: Many drivers were left without gas, food, or water, making the situation increasingly desperate.
  • Traffic Overflow: Seeking alternate routes, drivers flooded Interstate 40, causing even more backups.

Challenges for Emergency Responders

  • Hazardous Conditions: The fire's toxic chemicals and the risk of thermal runaway posed big challenges.
  • Logistical Issues: The remote incident location complicated the logistics of firefighting efforts, including the transportation of necessary equipment and personnel.

Safety Measures

  • Hazardous Material Concerns: Due to the dangerous nature of the burning batteries, extensive safety measures and hard closures were implemented.
  • Air Quality Monitoring: Emergency teams monitored the air quality closely to manage the exposure to harmful substances.

Now What?

Another Semi Battery Fire: On July 25, 2024, a car hauler caught fire on I-10 in El Paso when two electric vehicles ignited. The blaze shut down eastbound lanes for nearly seven hours, causing major traffic disruptions. Firefighters responded, and the highway eventually reopened after the situation was controlled.
