🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

📄 Kal Freight’s Bankruptcy Unveils Massive Fraud Scandal. Kal Freight Inc., a California-based trucking firm employing 600 drivers, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, revealing staggering allegations of fraud and asset mismanagement. Daimler Truck Financial Services claims Kal Freight fabricated titles for non-existent trailers, securing $16.8 million, and illegally transferred collateral worth $20 million to affiliates in Canada. Further, trucks and trailers were sold or leased under dubious transactions, risking $40+ million in creditor losses. To salvage operations, Kal Freight ousted its founder and appointed independent directors alongside a chief restructuring officer. Creditors and industry insiders now await resolution of this tangled web of deception and debt.

🌄 Jason Miller’s Dry Van Outlook for 2025. According to Jason Miller, the dry van truckload sector is poised for growth in H1 2025, driven by lower interest rates, a business-friendly climate following President Trump’s reelection, and strong residential construction activity. Freight demand is projected to rise, with a 2% YoY increase in the trucking ton-mile index by mid-2025. While gains won’t match previous highs due to stagnant oil and gas drilling, machinery and motor vehicles also promise robust freight volumes. Rates are expected to climb, with the sector's PPI forecasted to grow 4% by mid-year. However, potential risks like poor tariff policies or a port strike could dampen momentum, though Miller feels the demands will outweigh the negatives.

🚩 Trucking Owner Guilty of Emissions Tampering, COVID Loan Fraud. Pavel Ivanovich Turlak, owner of several Spokane, WA trucking companies, pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the Clean Air Act and fraudulently obtaining over $300,000 in COVID-19 relief funds. From 2017-2023, Turlak bought illegal “delete tune” files to disable pollution controls on his trucks and those of customers. Authorities found Turlak ineligible for relief funds due to his environmental violations but noted he falsely certified eligibility. “Families in Eastern Washington deserve to breathe cleaner air,” said US Attorney Waldref, “We will continue to ensure a healthy, high quality of life and keep our region safe and strong.”

Bots vs. Brokers: The Freight Debate

Paul’s LinkedIn post last week stirred up a debate in the comments.

As AI-powered agents make their way into freight, brokers are split: Are these tools the answer to endless calls and missed connections, or just another overhyped tech gimmick?

Two Sides of the Debate

Even the Silver brothers—two of freight’s sharpest minds—can’t agree:

  • Matt Silver: “Drivers yelling ‘Agent! Agent!’ at bots isn’t efficiency.”
  • Andrew Silver: “AI bots are getting smarter. Big changes are coming.”

What the Industry Is Saying

The comments highlighted below came from Paul’s recent LinkedIn post, where the freight industry shared their thoughts on AI’s role in brokerage.

AI Optimist:

Max Yergan (Founder, Emissionless):

"Bad brokers will not survive. Good brokers will integrate tech into their operation and use it to out-compete those who aren’t using tech, and provide a quality of service vastly better than what can be provided without tech"

What AI Really Aims to Do

Meme Credits: Meach/X

According to HappyRobot’s co-founders, AI isn’t replacing brokers—it’s helping them:

  • Automating the tasks brokers hate (check calls, rate confirmations, status updates).
  • Reducing burnout, so carrier reps stay longer in their roles.
“AI handles the boring stuff so brokers can focus on relationships and solving problems.”
Javier Palafox, Co-Founder, HappyRobot

Instead of frustrated carriers yelling into the void, AI ensures someone (or something) always answers.

The Frustration Is Real

When trying to reach brokers, what’s worse?

  • A bot that doesn’t get it 🤖
  • A human who doesn’t pick up 📞

When a carrier says, “Let me check with the driver,” they only call back 13% of the time, according to HappyRobot data. Interestingly, most respondents in our LinkedIn poll estimated the callback rate to be just 2%.

The Big Question

Will AI replace brokers or make them better?

Some believe AI will let shippers skip brokers entirely and connect directly with carriers. Others see it as a tool that will amplify the best brokers—leaving those who don’t adapt behind.

So, where do you stand? Are you team bot 🤖 or team human 🚛?
