Reddit Post of the Week

This week on r/FreightBrokers, a carrier recounting a chilling experience that nearly cost them eight loads and shut down their operation. It’s a cautionary tale for anyone in freight, showing just how far digital scammers will go to impersonate legitimate carriers, intercept loads, and disrupt businesses.

What Happened

The incident began when a dispatcher, working under pressure, clicked a “setup” link from a broker that prompted a remote access install and an .exe file download. While they didn’t proceed with the install, the hacker had already gained access to their email account. For about a week, nothing seemed wrong. Then came a series of red flags:

  • The email account had unknown addresses in its block list.
  • Booking emails were deleted, and notifications were blocked.
  • A hacker added their own device to the dispatcher’s phone line.
  • Using the company’s legitimate MC credentials, the scammer began booking loads under their identity — even answering calls from Highway, MCP, and brokers.

The fraud was eventually uncovered thanks to discrepancies noticed by track-and-trace teams. While the company managed to cancel the eight fraudulent loads in time, the damage was done: Highway, MCP, and RMIS blocked them, putting all 35 of their trucks out of operation temporarily.

Weeks later, Mode Transportation contacted them about a stolen load booked under their MC, confirming that the scammer was still using their credentials elsewhere.

As the poster wrote: “These scams are getting smarter.” The freight industry must too. If something feels off, investigate immediately.

X Post of the Week

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) introduced the WEIGH Act, which would require weigh stations to verify truckers’ CDLs and English proficiency, a federal move sparked by the Florida Turnpike crash involving undocumented driver Harjinder Singh.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Donalds Leads Federal Crackdown On Dangerous Illegal Alien Truckers

Industry coverage from CDLLIFE and FreightWaves frames it as a potential turning point in federal oversight. Donalds argued the current enforcement gap is "putting every American motorist at risk," while Commissioner Wilton Simpson emphasized: “If you can't read our signs, you shouldn't be on our roads.”

Overall, Donalds’ plan for the WEIGH Act would require that “all weigh stations along interstate highways enforce President Trump’s Executive Order to review commercial driver licenses for irregularities and verify the English language proficiency of truckers.” He emphasized that “safety must be the standard, not the exception,” and called the removal of such risks “non-negotiable.”

FreightCaviar Story of the Week

FMCSA quietly pulled critical daily datasets from its public portal this week, leaving freight brokers, compliance teams, and tech providers operating with outdated intel. The missing files include company census records, crash histories, and inspection data, essential tools for vetting carriers and preventing fraud. While monthly snapshots remain, many platforms now face 24–48 hour delays in data access.

Industry reaction was immediate. FreightWaves’ Craig Fuller compared it to “extending credit without verifying KYC,” while others suggested the outage may be tied to FMCSA’s ongoing Motus modernization and MC number phase-out. But with no official explanation, speculation ranges from technical error to regulatory dodge. As Steve Oatley puts it: “How are we supposed to set thresholds or contracts without current info?” Until FMCSA speaks up, the industry is left guessing.

LinkedIn Post of the Week

In a viral LinkedIn post, Nic Spears of NBS Freight called out a major red flag in trucking: a driver caught changing his DOT number on the side of a truck, a clear warning signs of potential fraud, theft, or double brokering. “This screams scam,” Spears wrote, adding, “THIS is what CHEAP gets you!”

Nic's story is reminiscent of the The Chicago Chameleon which you can read about here:
