đ Fatal Crash Driver Faces 17th Deportation, Widow Pushes for Reform. Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, 47, is facing his 17th deportation after serving a year in jail for a fatal crash on Coloradoâs Highway 285 in June 2024. Convicted of careless driving, he was released on March 30 and immediately detained by ICE. The victimâs widow, DeAnn Miller, expressed âmixed emotionsâârelief at his removal but guilt over altering his fate. ICE was in contact with her before Mendoza's release and later confirmed to her that they had him in custody. She now advocates for stricter trucking regulations, backing the Secure Roads and Safe Trucking Act of 2025 to enhance safety and accountability in the industry. âOur practices that weâre doing right now with our trucking industry are unsafe, and itâs killing people on the roads,â she said in an interview with Denver 7.

President Donald Trumpâs sweeping new tariffs take effect today, April 2, marking what the White House is calling the start of a ânew manufacturing era.â
At a 4 p.m. Rose Garden event, Trump is expected to formally roll out reciprocal tariffs on foreign imports. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitttold reporters the measures will be âeffective immediately,â despite growing concerns about their economic ripple effect.
âWall Street will be just fine,â Leavitt said.
Regarding negotiations, Leavitt explained:
âCertainly, the president is always up to take a phone call, always up for a good negotiation, but he is very much focused on fixing the wrongs of the past and showing that American workers have a fair shake.â
Letâs take a quick look at whatâs unfolding and what the industry is saying.
Markets Are Holding Their Breath
According to the Financial Times, fund managers are in risk-off mode, with one analyst calling the tariff event a âclearing event," either the beginning of a new trade war or the opening move in a negotiation spiral.
âIt should answer the biggest question from markets, which is if the tariffs are a means to an end, or the end.â â Chistopher Kreuger, TD Cowen Washington Research Group.
The VIX index, a key volatility metric, jumped over 4 points last week.
S&P 500 futures dipped this morning as investors wait for clarity.
JP Morgan's fixed-income desk: âWe donât know what tomorrow brings.â
And itâs not just Wall Street feeling the pressure. Bloombergâs Joe Weisenthal flagged the ISM-manufacturing report:
Only prices and inventories rising is a classic stagflation red flag.
Supply chain professor Jason Miller shared his thoughts on manufacturing, saying:
"Assuming very large tariffs get announced this week, I fear the manufacturing sector will see weakening output as we move through 2025."
Still, we've seen multiple companies like Johnson & Johnson, TSMC, and Foxconn announce billions of dollars in U.S. manufacturing investments. Nvidia has joined that list, pledging "hundreds of billions of dollars" in U.S. electronics.
Walmart Turns Up the Heat on Suppliers
As the worldâs largest retailer, Walmart is already adjusting to the new landscape. Per Reuters, the company is pressuring Chinese suppliers to cut prices by up to 10% to cushion the impact of tariffs on consumer goods.
But manufacturers are pushing back, citing slim margins and raw material price increases.
Bloomberg reports that Walmart still depends on China for a huge share of items like TVs, toys, apparel, and small appliances.
Global Reactions
Japan: âWeâll Fly to Washington If We Mustâ: Japan is stepping up its lobbying efforts as 25% auto tariffs are set to hit Japanese carmakers starting today. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters heâs prepared to fly to D.C. personally to seek an exemption. Japan remains off the exemption list, despite being one of Americaâs closest allies in Asia.
Israel: Meanwhile, Israel has gone the opposite route. On April 1, Israel announced it would eliminate all remaining tariffs on U.S. imports, calling it a move to strengthen ties and lower domestic costs.
However, Trumpâs scope is still vague. Aside from the confirmed 25% duty on car and car part imports, other goods from Europe, South Korea, Brazil, and India are rumored to be on the chopping block.
Despite the comparisons, a full-on trade war isnât guaranteed. U.S. could still score favorable deals through negotiation...if talks stay on the table.

Matt Silver, Co-Founder of Cargado, has been posting about the impact the 25% auto tariffs will potentially have in his newsletter:
Many are wondering whether this round of tariffs is the end goal or just a starting point. If today's Rose Garden announcement is vague, we could be looking at more market confusion ahead.
