ArcBest’s Tesla Semi test hits 1.55 kWh/mile, showing battery-electric trucks may be ready for regional freight operations.
ArcBest’s ABF Freight recently completed a three-week pilot test of the Tesla Semi, offering one of the clearest windows yet into the real-world performance of the long-delayed electric Class 8 tractor.
The result? The Tesla Semi not only matched diesel performance on standard runs, including the grueling climb over Donner Pass — it exceeded expectations on energy efficiency.
“We’re not looking for a truck that performs well ‘for an EV,’” said Matt Godfrey, ABF Freight president. “It must meet or exceed the performance and total cost of ownership targets of our most efficient diesel units.”
ArcBest’s performance metrics surpass those seen in earlier Tesla Semi pilots:
“The Tesla numbers speak for themselves,” said Mike Roeth, Executive Director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency. “They are showing us the future.”
ArcBest currently operates no Class 8 EVs beyond this pilot but maintains a small fleet of electric yard tractors and straight trucks. The company said the test will inform future decisions on EV deployment in its network.
Tesla plans to begin full production of the Semi in 2026 at its new factory in Reno, Nevada. For now, pilot programs like this one are helping carriers evaluate real-world use cases after years of delays since the truck’s initial unveiling in 2017.
As energy costs and emissions pressures mount, the freight industry continues watching closely for evidence that battery-electric trucks can scale. ArcBest’s pilot adds to growing signs that they might be closer than many expected.
