🔍 TIA Clarifies Role in TQL Overtime Dispute. In the wake of Total Quality Logistics (TQL) being found liable for unpaid overtime to former employees, the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) President Anne Reinke issued a statement. Reinke emphasizes that TIA's historical involvement with TQL was not a source of legal advice. The association provided broad industry guidance, but member firms, including TQL, bear responsibility for their operational decisions and compliance. "Our members know this. Each member, including TQL, is responsible for its own compliance and legal obligations. TQL does not dispute this," Reinke writes.
🚢 Flexport's Future in Flux: Amidst a series of financial and leadership upheavals, Flexport, a renowned freight-forwarding firm, plans to cut 30% of its workforce. This follows a 20% workforce reduction earlier in the year. This new round of layoffs comes shortly after the controversial exit of former Amazon exec Dave Clark as CEO and the departure of 11 other executives. While Petersen faces criticisms, notably from logistics consultant Brittain Ladd, who likens him to 'Littlefinger' from Game of Thrones, the company, bolstered by $2.3 billion in Silicon Valley funding, stands at a critical crossroads.
🏢 The Rise in Mega Bankruptcies. Large-scale corporate bankruptcies, termed "mega bankruptcies," are surging in 2023, raising concerns about the broader economy. SVB Financial, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Yellow are among the major players seeking Chapter 11 protection due to economic challenges and mounting debt. These bankruptcies have tripled compared to the previous year, impacting financial markets and causing significant job losses. While a recession isn't certain, analysts see warning signs. Even Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) businesses like Smile Direct Club and Blue Apron are struggling, signaling potential troubles for the sector.

Back in August of this year, Tom Stawinski & I traveled to Kaunas, Lithuania to meet Deividas (David) Kacinauskas, the EVP at UC (Unlimited Carrier) Group. Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city, has deep historical roots reaching back to the medieval period. Over the years, it flourished as a significant trade and cultural hub. From 1940 to 1990, Lithuania was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR. Following the weakening of the Soviet regime, Lithuania declared independence on March 11, 1990. Lithuania subsequently moved to strengthen its ties with the West and, in 2004, proudly became a member of both NATO and the European Union.

Post-independence, a significant number of Lithuanians migrated to the US, with Illinois being a prime destination. Trucking became a stepping stone for many, allowing them to climb the ladder of success from drivers to company owners. Chicago and the surrounding suburbs have many large, successful trucking companies of which the owner originates from Lithuania. I guess growing up in the communist USSR provided them with the grit and motivation to succeed.
The early 2010s saw the genesis of a significant trend – outsourcing dispatch and back-office tasks back to Lithuania. This was a cost-effective, strategic move, especially as the trucking industry was still recovering from the aftershocks of the Great Financial Recession (207-2008). Companies like UC Group saw the value and potential of this shift early on.

UC Group, a conglomerate of three companies – Unlimited Carrier, National Consolidated Services (NCS), and Truck Service Point – established a strong presence in Kaunas by the mid-2010s. Not limiting themselves to Lithuania, they expanded their operations to Colombia during the pandemic. David fondly reminisces about the occasional cultural hiccups resulting from such outsourcing.
From the early 2010s, major Lithuanian cities like Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda became hotspots for Chicago-based trucking companies seeking quality outsourced support. Several companies, including HMD Trucking and Cadence Premier, tapped into this emerging potential.

David highlighted a unique challenge faced by his dispatch team: cultural communication styles.
