🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

📈 Top 10 Freight Stocks of 2024. Here's a quick peek at some of the top ten freight stocks hedge funds are backing. This information is for educational purposes only and should not be considered financial advice. On the lower end, J.B. Hunt stock (JBHT) has 34 hedge fund holders, and Old Dominion (ODFL) has 38. Meanwhile, rail takes some top spots, with Union Pacific stock (UNP) having 87 hedge fund backings, CSX having 70, and Norfolk Southern (NSC) having 54. Currently, only 28% of transportation and logistics companies consider themselves 'advanced' in digitization. Therefore, companies that successfully integrate new technologies and adapt to changing market demands are likely to outperform.

🚚 NY Trucking Owner Caught in Web of Lies to FMCSA. Tony Kirik, former owner of Rochester-based Dallas Logistics, has been convicted of deceiving the FMCSA. Kirik submitted false documents to hide his company's poor safety record and created shell companies under family members' names to mask his involvement. He falsely registered his business as Dallas-based and owned by "J.Z." FMCSA examiners uncovered the truth: Dallas Logistics was actually a reincarnation of Kirik's previous company with negative safety ratings. Kirik faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

🚨 $5 Million Marijuana Bust at Border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a semi-truck carrying 2,323.67 pounds of marijuana at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas. The drugs had a street value of $5,198,328. The bust involved a 2009 International tractor hauling a suspicious shipment. Using canine units and high-tech inspection systems, officers discovered 98 packages of marijuana hidden in the trailer. Two Mexican citizens were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt.

Hurricane Beryl To Create Logistical Hurdles

Hurricane Beryl intensified to a Category 4 storm on Sunday, marking the earliest such occurrence in Atlantic hurricane history.

Let's examine the risks and potential opportunities this early start brings to the industry.

Key Stats:

  • Beryl intensified to Category 4 with 130 mph winds as of writing.
  • Earliest Category 4 hurricane on record in the Atlantic.
  • NOAA predicts 17-25 named storms this season.

Early Season Implications for Freight:

FreightWaves CEO Craig Fuller points out that while hurricanes typically boost freight demand through FEMA activity, Beryl's projected path into Mexico's key production areas could have the opposite effect.

A hit to Nuevo Laredo could slow cross-border freight for months. However, if the storm shifts north to Texas, it might put a pause on the current freight recession and spark a bull run, as Hurricane Harvey did in 2017.

  • FEMA Load Opportunities: FEMA loads often provide lucrative opportunities for carriers willing to navigate challenging conditions.
  • Increased Demand for Disaster Relief Supplies: Truckers may see a surge in demand for transporting essentials like water, non-perishable foods, and building materials to affected regions.
  • Extended Disruption Period: With hurricane activity starting in June instead of the typical August peak, freight professionals face a potentially longer period of weather-related disruptions.
  • Supply Chain Challenges: Early storms may catch some businesses off-guard, leading to sudden supply chain disruptions and increased demand for emergency shipments.

The unique path of Hurricane Beryl presents a complex scenario for the US freight industry. While it may not trigger the typical surge in FEMA-related freight, its potential impact on crucial Mexican production areas could lead to significant disruptions in cross-border trade.
