🇨🇳 China's Exports Decline by 7.5% in May, Surprising Markets. China's exports have taken a surprising downward turn, falling 7.5% in May year-on-year, much steeper than the predicted 0.4% drop. This decline marks the first since February, stirring worries over the growth trajectory of the world's second-largest economy. The slump was significant enough to lower export volumes below the levels seen at the beginning of the year. Notably, the value of China's exports to the U.S. dropped 15.1% in May compared to the same period last year.

THE ORIGIN & EVOLUTION OF FEDEX
FedEx (previously known as Federal Express) was founded by Fred Smith 50 years ago and revolutionized the shipping industry by offering overnight delivery services. Smith's visionary concept emerged during his undergraduate days at Yale, where he moonlighted as a charter pilot, flying computer parts. Observing the dawn of a computer-based society and automation, he saw the potential for a service that could quickly deliver parts crucial to keeping businesses running. Today, FedEx serves 220 countries, employs over 530,000 people, moves 15 million packages daily, and operates a fleet of 700 airplanes.
Fred Smith's Leadership and Employee Welfare
Smith's leadership style and values were shaped by his two combat tours in Vietnam, where he earned a Silver star, bronze star, and two purple hearts. He believes that everything he has achieved in business stems from what he learned in the Marine Corps, particularly about leading people. At FedEx, the welfare of employees is a top priority. Even part-time workers receive medical benefits and tuition refunds. Smith's approach fosters loyalty among employees, some of whom have been with the company since its early years.
Overcoming Challenges and Innovations
The early years of FedEx were fraught with financial difficulties, with the company losing $29 million in its first three years. To keep operations running, Smith had to request employees not to cash their paychecks temporarily. However, his hub and spoke system — planes flying into a central location and back out to their final destination — eventually proved that overnight delivery was possible. A tenfold increase in package numbers necessitated a technological solution to keep track of packages. This led to the development of the super tracker, a small scanning device that revolutionized logistics.
FedEx's Cultural Influence and Future Direction
FedEx's influence reached beyond logistics, even featuring in the Hollywood movie "Castaway" starring Tom Hanks. Smith saw the film as a $100 million infomercial for the company. FedEx’s operations continue to run like clockwork, with planes landing at one-minute intervals and reloaded for their next flight within hours. The company's focus on efficiency reflects Smith's vision for a service that always meets the ticking clock of the modern, automated society.
