🎣 Phishing For Freight

Even giants like Uber Freight aren't immune to phishing scams and deceptive hackers.

🎣 Phishing For Freight

Good Monday Morning. Would you believe that less cargo ship pollution is supposedly causing more global warming? Something else is also in the water – bigger freight players are increasingly taking the bait in email phishing scams. It turns out that giant cybersecurity budgets don’t always stop you from getting hooked. Meanwhile, federal investigators have just reeled in a pretty hefty catch.

Can you guess how many kilograms of cocaine have got a Canadian truck driver on the line for up to life in prison?

🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

The North Atlantic warmed up this year, partly due to a 2020 UN rule that cut sulfur emissions from cargo ships by 80%.

🤔 Surprise: Sulfur-Emitting Cargo Ships Are Good For Planet Earth? Sulfur clouds produced by cargo ships have unexpectedly played a role in cooling the planet's oceans by reflecting sunlight. A 2020 UN regulation, which slashed sulfur emissions by 80%, is believed by some to be a contributing factor to the recent warming of the Atlantic waters. The idea of utilizing such clouds as a weapon against climate change is tempting, but experts are raising flags about intentionally producing them due to unforeseen repercussions. Private companies, like European Astrotech, dabble in sun-reflecting tech, fueling debates about its future role in climate strategy.

📦 UPS's $170K Worker Deal: A Tipping Point for Shippers. UPS now faces challenges in balancing employee demands for better compensation with market competitiveness. While UPS recently entered a $30 billion labor agreement benefiting around 340,000 workers, averting a potential strike, it also led to the loss of key customers. As a response to cover the increased labor costs, UPS might resort to hiking its shipping rates, which could deter businesses from using their services, potentially harming their market position in the long run.

🌎 Manufacturing Migration: Americas Over Asia.  As we have reported in the past, more and more manufacturers are looking towards the Americas than Asia for better cost and risk management. Companies like Mexico City's Preslow are shifting production closer to home, reducing their reliance on Asian manufacturing from 40% to 20%. The move offers not only cost savings but also more production flexibility. In response to this trend, industrial intelligence firm Lectra has set up a new facility in Connecticut.

PHISHING FOR FREIGHT

TForce Operations Manager alerts carriers of fraudulent DAT postings.

The Rise of Cybersecurity Threats in the Freight Industry

Load boards have become as integral to our daily routines as morning coffee, but this familiarity might be causing many to overlook glaring cybersecurity red flags. Phishing scams, once uncommon in the freight industry, are now making headlines by targeting major players.

Prominent Players: Not Immune to Scams

Surprisingly, even industry giant Uber Freight wasn't immune. An image that was sent to us depicted an ostensibly legitimate Uber DAT account. However, a closer look revealed a dubious Gmail address associated with the account. Similarly, we found out of TForce being impersonated on DAT. Deceptive scammers craftily used the 'tfwwi.net', a slight distortion of TForce's official 'tfwwi.com', to ensnare unsuspecting victims.

A follower of FreightCaviar DM'd us about the compromise of Uber Freight's DAT account.

Common Hacking Tactics

There are several ways through which these hackers penetrate secure systems. An increasingly common method involves sending unsuspecting users an innocent-looking ".exe" file. Which could be used for phishing your login details. In another scam variant, victims receive what appears to be an official email from DAT, containing a link that prompts them to log into their accounts. However, this email is actually from a hacker. When users enter their DAT account credentials, they are unknowingly submitting them to a counterfeit website created by the hacker to steal their information. Regardless of the strategy employed, it's vital always to scrutinize domain names, URLs, and even phone numbers.

A follower of FreightCaviar was sent an email with a link to download a 'carrier confirmation'. The catch? The link ended with a ".exe" extension, a telltale sign of possible malware or phishing threats.

Hope in Combatting Freight Scams

However, there are glimmers of hope on the horizon. The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) recently launched its revamped Watchdog® program. Developed in partnership with Highway, its primary objective is to spotlight and eradicate fraudulent activities in logistics. Anne Reinke, TIA's CEO, emphasized the necessity of a "secure and transparent transportation ecosystem."

DAT's Countermeasures Against Cyber Threats

In another promising move, DAT recently rolled out a series of countermeasures against fraud and double brokering. These include the incorporation of multi-factor authentication, the unveiling of a new Fraud Protection Program, and the strengthening of its Network Integrity Unit. Their technology suite has also been upgraded to more efficiently detect and flag potential fraudulent actions.

Debates and Speculations

However, not everyone is convinced of these efforts. Craig Fuller from FreightWaves expressed skepticism on Twitter, pointing out that DAT's cybersecurity breaches seem to occur more frequently than Truckstop's. Users online are churning out theories, with explanations ranging from the sheer volume of transactions on DAT to differences in their respective grading systems.

In a nutshell: even with robust cybersecurity budgets, freight brokerages aren't invincible. The key takeaway? Exercise vigilance and always double-check.
