Reddit Post of the Week

Over on r/FreightBrokers, one redditor tackled the growing controversy over dispatching services, questioning whether they’re doing “ten times more harm than good.” The original post called out the rise of TikTok-driven dispatching courses, arguing that charging carriers a straight percentage of the load “makes zero sense” and warning that many new dispatchers lack the experience or accountability to add real value.

Reactions from the community revealed deep frustration.

One commenter shared:

“We refuse to work with ANY dispatch service. As a carrier, we field more calls from dispatchers in other countries claiming they have inside knowledge and access to loads.”

Another added that dispatchers are “ruining the reputations of solid drivers,” suggesting that their tactics often reflect poorly on carriers who rely on them.

Not all feedback was negative, though. Some acknowledged that there are reputable dispatching operations providing quality service, but as one commenter noted,

“They are absolutely the minority, and they need a meaningful amount of government regulation to even have a net neutral impact on the trucking market.”

The commenter went further, suggesting that requiring dispatchers to obtain their own MC number and lease on owner-operators would create much-needed accountability.

The consensus: while a few dispatchers add real value, the majority are seen as unregulated middlemen muddying the waters for both carriers and brokers. And unless stronger oversight is introduced, the debate over their role in the market is likely to continue.

X Post of the Week

This week’s post highlighted the continued nuisance in freight today: organized cargo theft.

LMNT CEO, James Murphy shared that his company lost $1.6 million in product after a driver, armed with legitimate paperwork, picked up a load and disappeared. The scheme raises questions of hacked systems, or even insider involvement.

FreightWave's Craig Fuller gave his thoughts on this story noting:

“It’s an arms race with billions on the line… Why rob a bank when you can just steal a million dollars worth of cargo by impersonating a trucking company?”

Freight fraud and cargo theft remain a raging issue across the industry, evolving rapidly with advances in fraud schemes. According to CargoNet, theft incidents in Q2 2025 rose by 13% year-over-year, totaling 884 reported events worth over $128 million; average loss per shipment exceeded $200,000.

It's well known that organized criminals are now using identity theft, falsified credentials, insider collusion, and cyber-enabled fraud to spoof legitimate carriers and exploit load boards. Carriers and shippers are facing mounting operational risks that insurance alone cannot mitigate, especially brand erosion and lost revenues.

It goes without saying that being alert and watching out for scams and fraud is no longer optional in today’s freight market, it’s essential for survival.

FreightCaviar Story of the Week

Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have officially agreed to merge in an $85 billion cash-and-stock transaction, creating the first coast-to-coast Class I railroad in U.S. history. Together, the combined enterprise will span over 50,000 route miles across 43 states, valued at more than $250 billion, with annual synergy potential of $2.75 billion.

But new data shared by Michigan State University professor Jason Miller adds critical depth: based on 2024 carload traffic across all six U.S. Class I railroads, UP–NS would command an estimated 43% total market share, with BNSF trailing at 27%.

Jason Miller’s data shows UP–NS dominating key sectors like intermodal (46%), chemicals (49%), and autos (47%), a scale that could pressure rivals BNSF and CSX to explore consolidation. Yet some shippers like Jeffery Carlson noted that market share isn’t always the deciding factor:

“For us, the railroads are effectively monopolies since access is determined by geography, not by rate.”

For brokers, the deal means less competitive tension at major hubs and potentially tighter margins, but also opportunities to step in when integration creates service disruptions.

LinkedIn Post of the Week

Despite being from two weeks ago, the story of ShipSierra's Paul Mishchuk showed just how quickly a “too good to be true” load can unravel into a classic double-broker scam.

A $4,500 Kentucky-to-Arizona offer set off alarms when the rate confirmation showed odd formatting, altered dates, and a suspicious email domain. Further investigation revealed the BOL listed Maryland as the destination — while the “broker” insisted on Arizona delivery.

Instead of taking the bait, Paul's team:

  • Contacted the manufacturer directly
  • Confirmed with the distributor
  • Delivered the freight to the correct warehouse

In doing so, they protected a $150K shipment from theft and earned the shipper’s gratitude.

The lesson is clear: scrutinize every document, verify every detail, and trust your gut.
