🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

🌪️ Tornado Tramples Dollar Tree DC. Over the weekend, a vicious series of tornadoes devastated the Midwest region. The storms confirmed over 20 tornadoes, some hitting EF-3 levels, and resulted in at least five fatalities. The Dollar Tree Distribution Center in Marietta, Oklahoma, took a direct hit, halting operations and causing substantial inventory losses. According to sources, everyone on site was safe. Logistics operations take another hit due to extreme weather, which was predicted as a top supply chain risk for 2024.

♨️ Summer Season: Rates and Routes. As summer rolls in, it's time to look ahead to the fired-up lanes of Q3, but freight rates are still in the red. Using Farelanes rate data, Kevin Hill points out that nearly all trailer modes are still down compared to rate-per-mile data from 2023. As for which routes to watch for July, Southern states will send produce up north, while the Midwest exports grains and machinery. Out west, California's orchards and vineyards are offloading their harvests, and in Texas, Independence Day barbecues are driving the beef boom. The market's overall mood? Cautious but ripe for the strategic, Hill hints.

🗳️ Election Influence on Supply Chain. The upcoming 2024 U.S. elections are rattling the supply chain. Mexico’s rising as our new top exporter, nudging China aside. Trade is thriving, yet the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is up for a tough review, with a $152 billion trade imbalance between the U.S. and Mexico on the discussion table. Border bills are benched until after the elections, leaving policies hanging. Alain Bédard of the Canadian-based TFI warns of a freight market freeze till '25. Meanwhile, cybersecurity risks are high, especially at U.S. Ports. The typical 59 million monthly cyber attempts the Port of L.A. experiences will jump to new highs.

Q1 Insights from Major Carriers

Saia's share price fell 21% after its Q1 earnings report; however, it is still up 47% in the past year.

Let’s look at what’s happening post-Q1 with major carriers and their strategies moving forward:

Knight-Swift

  • Shifting Gears to LTL: Aiming to grow their less-than-truckload sector into a $2 billion network.
  • Why They're Betting on It: They've seen better margins in LTL than their larger truckload segment.
  • Speed Bumps: The overall slump in freight demand is a challenge they’re navigating through strategic acquisitions.

Universal Logistics

  • Revenue Ramp-Up: Enjoyed an overall 12.5% revenue boost in Q1, driven by their contract logistics segment. However, its trucking segment revenue decreased by 12.6%.
  • The Strategy: Diversifying their service offerings to stay robust against market shifts.
  • Looking Ahead: The competitive environment has them looking for an upturn in the latter half of the year.

Old Dominion

  • Staffing Surge: Since September, 500 workers have been hired to prepare for anticipated growth, bringing the total to 22,891 workers.
  • Why It Looks Promising: They’re betting on a demand rebound and want to be ready to capitalize.
  • Current Hurdles: Demand is still lagging, making this seem more like a leap of faith.

Saia

  • Missing the Mark: A Q1 miss and weak March shipments sent stocks tumbling.
  • Their Playbook: They're not slowing down on expansion plans, with plans to open 15-20 new terminals this year.
  • Obstacles: They're feeling the pinch of an underperforming market and need a strong rebound. Plus, CFO Doug Col is set to retire in May.

Covenant Logistics

  • Acquisition Costs: An $8M expense related to their Lew Thompson acquisition signals growth intent.
  • Why They're Optimistic: The long-term goal is to triple the subsidiary’s fleet and volumes.
  • Speed Bumps: They're up against a tough freight market and operational costs from recent moves.

Up next, C.H. Robinson is set to announce its Q1 results on Wednesday. The company's stock has taken a hit recently, dropping to just 10% above its lowest point during the COVID-era.
