In serious news, we did a deep dive into the current state of the freight market. It's a bit lengthy, but we consolidated a lot of data points. We hope you enjoy it and have a wonderful weekend!

šŸ¤” Question of the Day: When does Supply Chain Expert Jason Miller predict we will see the next bull market in the truckload freight market? Find the answer in our main story.

šŸ” WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

🚚 UPDATE: Charges Filed In Dangling Sysco Semi Case. In March, a Sysco semi-truck dangled over Louisville's Clark Memorial Bridge after a crash. Driver Sydney Thomas was rescued by firefighter Bryce Carden. New dashcam footage shows Trevor W. Branham’s reckless driving that caused the crash. Branham, now in a wheelchair, faces multiple charges, including wanton endangerment.

šŸ›’ Walmart vs. Amazon: The Retail Battle Heats Up. Walmart’s reign as America’s top retailer is under threat from Amazon. Last year, Walmart’s sales hit $648 billion, but Amazon isn’t far behind at $575 billion and growing faster. Walmart is exploring new revenue streams like advertising, store expansions, and premium foods to stay ahead. Supply chain expert Brittain Ladd suggests bold moves, including potential mergers and acquisitions, to counter Amazon’s growth, especially in the grocery sector. Good news for the rest of us: The rivalry will push innovations in supply chain and logistics even further.

šŸ”Œ States vs. California: The Electric Truck Battle. Seventeen states are suing to block California's Advanced Clean Fleets rule, claiming it disrupts interstate commerce and burdens their economies. They argue the rule, which mandates electric trucks, will damage roads, strain power grids, and increase costs. The lawsuit highlights concerns over heavier electric trucks causing more road wear and increased demand for electricity. States like Nebraska worry about losing potential ethanol-powered truck markets. Meanwhile, ChargePoint's new Megawatt Charging System promises to support electric trucks with up to 3 MW of power, pushing the industry toward zero emissions.

DOT Blitz Brings Optimism, But Is It Too Soon to Sing?

Kevin Nolan: Optimism on the Brokerage Floor

Reflecting on the DOT Blitz Week atmosphere, Nolan Transportation Group Founder Kevin Nolan shared some surprising sentiments from the freight brokerage floor.

It seems like a shift in mood, but how does this align with the broader market data?

April’s Same-Carrier Comparisons: A Glimmer of Hope

For the first time in a long while, April's same-carrier comparisons showed a year-over-year increase in average purchases. Logistics Entrepreneur Ben Van Zee compiled key data that shows some carriers are seeing a rebound in business activity.

  • Average Purchase Totals: Up 15% YoY.
  • Loads Hauled: Up 50% from last year.
  • Average Invoice Size: Down 10% YoY.

But is this enough to suggest a turnaround?

Who’s Hauling All This Cheap Freight?

Despite some positive signs, the market is still flooded with cheap freight. Why?

  • Debt Load: High debt loads force carriers to accept low-paying jobs.
  • Operational Costs: Costs include insurance, maintenance, fuel, and personal expenses.

The persistence of low rates continues to be a thorn in the side for many carriers, struggling to make ends meet. The ongoing challenge of low rates is directly influenced by the broader supply and demand dynamics

  • Market Saturation: The oversupply of capacity in the market keeps rates low. Despite high operational costs, carriers must continue to operate to service their debt and cover expenses.

Supply Chain Expert Jason Miller suggests we "need roughly a 3 percentage point swing in the balance of supply and demand to trigger the next bull market in the truckload sector" and predicts this won't happen until Q2 2025.

Trucking Ton-Mile Index: Weak Demand Conditions Persist

Miller also discusses the trucking ton-mile index remains in a slump, indicating ongoing weak demand conditions.

  • Supply-Demand Imbalance: Excess capacity continues to plague the market.
  • Freight Recession: Supply growth overtook demand growth in Q2 2022, worsening in Q3.

Truckload Carrier Profits Hit 14-Year Low

Truckload carrier profits sank to a 14-year low in the first quarter, despite a healthy U.S. economy. ACT Research highlights:

  • Profit Margins: Collapsed to 2.6% (3.0% seasonally adjusted).
  • ā€œThe opening stanza of 2024 was notably bad for the very good carriers who make up the group,ā€ said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s President and Senior Analyst.

Growing Skepticism Among Experts

There’s growing skepticism among freight experts about the predictability of market cycles. Drew Herpich from Nolan Transportation Group argues that while the market is rebalancing, the recovery period is prolonged compared to past cycles.

ā€œThe market is rebalancing itself. That said, this part of the cycle is taking longer to flip when compared to what we saw in 2021/2022 or even in 2018.ā€

Looking Ahead
As we move forward, the freight market appears to be a mixed bag. On one hand, there are pockets of optimism and some positive indicators like the same-carrier comparisons. On the other hand, persistent low rates and weak demand metrics paint a challenging picture.

The road ahead is uncertain. As Kevin Nolan’s reflections suggest, the mood on the ground can shift rapidly, and staying informed is the biggest weapon you can arm yourself with.
