🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

💵 Landstar Reports $1.15B Q1 Revenue Following Fraud Delay. Landstar posted $1.15 billion in Q1 revenue after a delayed earnings release tied to a $4.8 million international fraud charge. CEO Frank Lonegro clarified the incident did not affect North American operations. Revenue declined 1.6% year-over-year, with net income down to $29.8 million. Despite soft demand, Q1 load volumes surpassed Q4—breaking a 15-year trend. Van revenue fell 5.3%, while power-only surged 27.8%. Cross-border activity remains crucial, especially amid trade policy shifts. Lonegro said the company is focused on long-term strategy, noting, “Our focus continues to be on accelerating our business model.”

🚨 Two Fatal Crashes Add More Fuel on Trucking Oversight and Safety Reform. Two deadly crashes this May—one in Alabama, the other in Tennessee—have reignited concerns over trucking safety. In Alabama, John McAdams was charged with murder after driving up to 90 mph and causing eight crashes, killing 22-year-old William Hardrick. McAdams admitted to drinking tequila beforehand. Days later in Tennessee, Joseph Antoinier rear-ended multiple vehicles on I-75, killing two and injuring eight. He faces charges including reckless homicide. Antoinier was driving under Amazon Relay, which said it enforces “rigorous safety criteria.” These back-to-back tragedies add to the growing pressure on regulators to address driver vetting, impairment, and training gaps before more lives are lost.

🤝 Lineage, Tyson Launch $1B Cold-Storage Partnership to Overhaul Supply Chain. Lineage Logistics and Tyson Foods are teaming up on a nearly $1 billion cold-storage overhaul to streamline Tyson’s supply chain and expand national capacity. The deal includes acquiring four Tyson-owned warehouses and building two new facilities, adding 130 million cubic feet of space. Over 1,000 Tyson employees will transition to Lineage, with Tyson remaining a key customer. Lineage CEO Greg Lehmkuhl highlighted the role of automation and data science in the partnership. Tyson expects the shift to cut costs and emissions, with CEO Donnie King projecting $200 million in annual savings by 2030.

Cargo Theft Is Out of Control

New data shows cargo theft in North America has surged 1,500% since 2021, costing the industry up to $35 billion a year.

Organized theft rings are hitting distribution centers in California. Hijackings are rising across Mexico. And logistics companies are also getting squeezed by internal fraud and soaring insurance premiums.

Mexico: Targeted Theft Concentrated in Key Corridors

According to Overhaul’s Q1 2025 Mexico Cargo Theft Report, 84% of all cargo thefts occurred in just ten states. The States of Mexico and Puebla alone accounted for 38% of all incidents, followed by Guanajuato (11%).

  • Top commodities stolen: Food & Drinks (34%), Building & Industrial goods (10%), Auto & Parts (9%).
  • Timing: 82% of thefts took place between Monday and Friday.

The report details emerging theft patterns, including methods used in Guanajuato, and includes a documented case of successful cargo recovery.

It stresses the importance of proactive risk monitoring and visibility solutions for shippers seeking to navigate the shifting threat landscape in 2025.

California: $1.5 Million Cargo Theft Ring Dismantled

In California, law enforcement arrested four suspects in connection with a months-long investigation into a coordinated cargo theft operation.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office announced charges of auto theft, cargo theft, and conspiracy against Victor Alvarez, Brenda Alvarez, Mauricio Gachicoa, and Otto Rivas. All were booked on $250,000 bail.

The thefts spanned from December 2024 to January 2025, involving:

  • Theft of multiple semi-trucks used to transport stolen trailers.
  • Targeted locations: Camarillo-based industrial sites, including the Harbor Freight Distribution Center and Plush Beds.
  • Recovered cargo: Stolen goods linked to Amazon, Samsung, TJ Maxx, and other retailers were found at six Southern California sites. The value of the recovered goods is at $1.5 million.

Landstar's Q1: The Financial Cost of Fraud

Landstar’s latest earnings show what this crisis looks like on paper.

  • Profits are down $0.47/share YoY
  • $0.31/share lost to rising insurance and claims
  • $0.10/share—or $4.8 million—lost to fraud at an international agent

The kicker? That fraud had been happening since 2019, unnoticed until a recent change of ownership. The company is now pursuing civil and criminal charges, and investing in security and vetting tools.

Insurance costs, fraud and cargo theft hit Landstar’s Q1
Freight broker Landstar System reported a messy first quarter, dragged down by insurance costs, fraud and stolen cargo.

Landstar’s cross-border revenue is also down 5%—no surprise, since it’s heavily exposed to U.S.–Mexico freight.
