🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN'WHAT'S IN FREIGHT

🚚 Meadow Lark Closes Doors. Meadow Lark, a prominent asset-based 3PL firm with 40 years of history, abruptly shuts down, leaving 275 employees in limbo. Despite recent success, including $200M in revenue in 2023, the FMCSA revoked the company's broker authority back in August. Meadow Lark's Director of Marketing confirmed the closure on LinkedIn, triggering distressed reactions from drivers and partners. The fate of outstanding payments and the company's credit situation remains uncertain, awaiting an official statement from the CEO.

📈 U.S. Container Imports Surge. Despite concerns, U.S. imports continue to rise, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. In September, the U.S. imported 27% more than the low point in February. Year-to-date imports are 2.5% higher than 2019, and September's imports were up 8% from the same month in 2019. Import volumes from China remain strong, accounting for 39.3% of total imports. The National Retail Federation slightly reduced its full-year forecast but still expects robust cargo volumes. Declining spot rates suggest a potential Q4 slowdown. Overall, the import market remains resilient despite recent fluctuations.

🖥️ Uber Freight Elevates With Trio of Tech Innovations. With a shift to an AI-centric approach, new features promise improved ETA predictions and enhanced customer support. Collectively, these advancements spotlight Uber Freight's intent to push the envelope in tech-driven logistics solutions.

As the economy continues to deal with issues like inflation, global tensions, and a looming recession, here's a look at how top brands are strategizing for now and the future. As more earnings reports roll in, it's key to follow company trends to anticipate individual shipper needs and see where the logistics market could be headed next.

PepsiCo

Pepsi, Bless Its Heart, Still Thinks It's Getting Tesla Semis This Year
PepsiCo was the first company to receive the Tesla semis, obtaining its initial batch at the end of 2022.
  • Revenue: 6.7% reported growth to $23.45 billion.
  • Inventory Levels/Supply Chain: Pepsi increased prices and offered smaller packs due to inflation, leading to more sales but less volume. On the upside, the company is advancing its digital transformation goals by integrating AI, robotics, predictive analytics, and other technologies. This includes a notable partnership with the process mining firm Celonis, which helped Pepsico lower order rejections to 4%.
  • Guidance: For the full year 2023, PepsiCo expects organic revenue growth of 10% and core EPS of $7.54, with CEO Ramon Laguarta citing investments in brands, capacity, and technology.

Walgreens

  • Revenue: $35.42 billion, up by 9.2% from last year.
  • Inventory Levels/Supply Chain: The company continues to push transformation from a drugstore chain to a large healthcare company. Despite decreased COVID-19 care demand and lower consumer spending, the company still saw YoY growth.
  • Guidance: Projects revenue for fiscal 2024 to be between $141 billion to $145 billion, reflecting incremental cost savings and accelerating profitability in U.S. healthcare.

Constellation Brands

Constellation Brands, the maker of Corona and Modelo, has had a stellar year due to the Bud Light boycott. Photo Source: Constellation Brands.
  • Revenue: Reported at $2.84 billion, up 7%.
  • Inventory Levels/Supply Chain: Modelo Especial sales rose 14% amid a Bud Light boycott. Underperformance in the wine and spirits brands, with a 14% decrease in sales and an 8% decrease in cases sold to retailers by distributors.
  • Guidance: The company raised its earnings per share outlook to a range of $9.60 to $9.80, up from a prior range of $9.35 to $9.65. This increase in guidance reflects the improved results of its wine and spirits strategy and the strong performance of Constellation Brands' beer business.

Nike

NIKE, Inc.'s Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) breakdown for the year ending 5/31/2023, showcasing regional performance and year-over-year changes. Photo Source: Nike.
  • Revenue: $12.94 billion, up by 2% YoY.
  • Inventory Levels/Supply Chain: The company has struggled with inventory management issues throughout the year, leading to discount merchandise. The shoemaker has also experienced weaker sales in China, its third biggest market. The company has been using AI and ML tech to address these challenges.
  • Guidance: Expect mid-single-digit revenue growth for fiscal 2024 due to modest markdown improvements. Finance chief Matthew Friend highlights monitoring foreign exchange rates, consumer demand over the holiday season, and the company's wholesale order book.

Costco

Costco Wholesale Corporation's Q4 and fiscal year 2023 financial highlights: An overview of net sales, comparable sales by region, net income, and global presence. Photo Source: Costco.
  • Revenue: $78.9 billion for the quarter, compared with $72.1 billion a year earlier.
  • Inventory Levels/Supply Chain: Noted a drop in the average transaction amount but increased traffic. The surge in memberships was influenced by increased home cooking, inflation, and millennials settling in suburban homes with more storage space.
  • Guidance: The company's growth in memberships surpassed the rate of new store openings, which expanded by just under 3%, hinting at a stronger emphasis on maximizing current store capacities and member retention in the future.
