☕️ Medieval Peasant or Freight Broker

Good Friday Morning. Today's freight headlines are headlined by Transplus' bankruptcy, a potential UPS strike, and Yellow teetering on bankruptcy despite a massive bailout. In a lighter vein, a FreightCaviar poll revealed a startling number of logistics workers prefer the life of a medieval peasant. 🐔 WHAT’S COOKIN’ IN FREIGHT

🚛 Transplus Files For Bankruptcy. Mississippi-based firm, Transplus Freight System Inc., files for bankruptcy liquidation, leaving over 60 small trucking companies collectively in millions of dollars of debt. Citing assets of up to $50,000 and liabilities between $1 million and $10 million, Transplus has announced no funds will be available for unsecured creditors post-administrative fees. Amid a year of declining freight volumes and rates, this move starkly underlines the mounting challenges and uncertainties for trucking companies and freight brokerages.

🪧 Potential UPS Strike Threatens Major Disruptions. The Teamsters Union has warned UPS that a driver's strike might be imminent if the company does not provide a better offer by Friday. After a subpar offer from UPS, the union has given the company a week's notice to improve its proposal. The potential strike, which could begin in August if no agreement is reached, might become the largest single employer strike in U.S. history, with around 340,000 drivers potentially walking off the job.

📉 Yellow Trucking Faces Bankruptcy After $700M Bailout. Yellow is facing a potential bankruptcy this summer after a long-standing financial struggle, further exacerbated by a dispute with its union. The company, which lost over $100 million in 2019 and has outstanding debt exceeding $1.5 billion, including a $700 million pandemic relief loan from the federal government, is now in litigation with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Yellow accuses the union of hindering its restructuring plans and causing further financial damage.

MEDIEVAL PEASANT OR FREIGHT BROKER?

Source: MorningBrew

A couple of days ago, MorningBrew shared a photo on Instagram, stating that "US workers get less vacation time than medieval peasants." Intrigued by this, we asked our audience on Instagram & Twitter whether they would prefer to be a peasant or work in logistics.

Surprisingly, out of almost 600 votes on Instagram, a staggering 57% said they would prefer to be a peasant. On Twitter, out of 90 votes, 51% said they would prefer the same.

Our Instagram results out of almost 600 votes.

Our Instagram results are startling. With almost 600 votes, it raises the question: Is the logistics industry really so toxic that most of us would prefer to be medieval peasants? As the saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side. We might hate our current circumstances enough to dream of simpler times, working in the fields and eating peasant food (whatever that may be).

Another surprising result came from a poll we ran earlier this week, featured in Wednesday's newsletter. Out of almost 800 votes on Instagram, 47% of respondents said they are planning on quitting their job within the next year. We suspect many of these individuals are the same ones who voted in favor of a peasant's life. These results underscore the need for companies to prioritize company culture and worker well-being to retain employees.

Interestingly, Transloop announced a partnership with Calm this week. Calm is "the #1 app for Sleep, Meditation, and Relaxation, with over 100 million downloads and over 1.5M+ 5-star reviews." Given the stressful nature of logistics, this could be a game-changer. Burnout is a common issue in this industry. It's important that leaders and owners prioritize employee well-being so that instead of wanting to become medieval peasants or quit their jobs, workers can actually enjoy their roles.
